The City of Irvine was incorporated in 1971, which previously had been predominantly agricultural and grazing land, purchased by James Irvine in 1878. Throughout the 43 square miles, it was one of the earlier master planned communities divided into "villages", each with their own architecture, and included many parks and open areas. It also includes the University of California, Irvine, as well as satellite campuses from other universities, in addition to the former military bases, MCAS El Toro and MCAS Tustin, which are now being developed into residential and cultural areas, called the Great Park and Tustin Legacy, respectively. Irvine is a diverse community, with many commercial developments including the Irvine Spectrum, located at the intersection of the 5/405 freeways. Still building new homes, Irvine continues to expand with communities like Orchard Hills, Hidden Hills, Portola Springs, Beacon Park and Great Park.
